The best way to learn about the Arduino is through the use of a Starter Kit. The Earthshine Electronics Starter Kit is the best on the market with a fantastic selection of components. You get the new Arduino Uno (Revision 3 - Dec 2011), Mega or Duemilanove (DFRduino), or without an Arduino if you already have one, plus over 150 electronic components (beats any other starter kit) to make your own projects with. Not only that, but you get a free eBook “The Complete Beginners Guide to the Arduino”, which takes you step by step through how to use your Arduino, basic electronics and programming in the Arduino/C Programming language. Available without an Arduino Board in case you already have one but need some components to learn with.

ASK Contents

You will learn about interfacing your Arduino to Transistors, DC Motors, LED’s, RGB LED’s, 7-Segment displays, Buttons, Temperature and Light Sensors, Piezo Sounders, Shift Registers and Potentiometers.

Projects included in the book are:-

SOS Morse Code Signaller
Interactive Traffic Lights
LED Chase Effect (Knight Rider)
Mood Lamp
Serial Controlled Mood Lamp
Piezo Sounder Melody Player

2011-08-14 diane h. Completed this starter kit and manual - loved it! I've ordered and now completed this starter kit and all projects in the guide and really loved it. I ordered the Mega 2560 board and everything came through packed well and working.

I like that the kit gives you a range of all the little things (resistors and LED's for example) so that for future projects I'm going to work on I won't be running to the store or waiting for an order from online for a tiny little inexpensive - but necessary - part to keep working.

I like the writing style of the manual, its informative and explains a lot clearly and well. I ran through all 16 exercises without much difficulty. Yes a piece or two may have been different, but I would rather have a better/latest version of a part anyway and its part of the learning process to figure it out and this kit and this guide made it easy to do. Its meticulously done and you walk away understanding the sample code very well.

Also when I emailed a question it was answered promptly. Great service!
2011-05-25 Ben L. Excellent! I was thinking of dabbling with an Arduino for ages but every kit I found seemed to not have much with it, but then I found this one. I don't think the price can be beaten and this one is much better for learning from scratch.
Also, the customer service is brilliant.
I can happily recommend this to anyone!
2011-05-23 Albert H. Some of the components are different to the Guide Great kit.
I got it in December and have played with it since.

I've put some of my projects on my YouTube page. The only things I've bought extra are a few servos.

Have fun hacking.

A few things to note.

The temperature sensor is a Kelvin one rather than Celsius as used in the guide. I found a sample circuit and code at: http://www.danielandrade.net/2008/07/05/temperature-sensor-arduino/

The LED Matrix is Red/Green, so even better than the single colour matrix in the guide. If you want to use the guide it's a good idea to get the datasheet for the Red/Green LED Matrix Download Page so you know the wiring:

2010-08-04 Dino M. Just have to say: you guys rock! I actually don't have this starter kit but I've been using your manual and I have to say it's brilliant! I have studied electronics before so I'm not a complete beginner (new to the programming language though), but your manual is so well written that when I did come across the newer components and coding concepts, I found myself walking away with a really good understanding of what was going on. And because of your excellent explanations I can see a total beginner being able to start building a good foundation.

I've looked at other tutorials and there's always one problem or other---either too simplified (i.e. "connect this lead to that" with no explanations), lots of mundane and ridiculously bad humor, or just a whole lot of condescension. Your manual has none of that. And unlike other tutorials that take you one place and nowhere else, yours opens up a whole lot of things to build on. Especially love the Exercises at the end! Other manuals would fail miserably if they tried to get people to actually make use of what they learned and adapt it to solve other problems.

Really, I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to use the Arduino. It's a great read and you put in everything that someone would need to know in a really succint fashion. Who else would bother with resistor tables and an explanation of data types? But you present them in a meaningful way.

Sadly, I'm in Japan but if I ever see your products around, I'll be sure to pick 'em up. I normally hate starter kits but yours is especially well priced (even with the mighty Pound). I spent way more buying the stuff seperately and I still don't have half of what comes in this kit.

Great job guys!
